Memorial Day is approaching on May 28th. The day honors all those who died while serving in the United States armed forces.
Many also recognize the holiday as a day to honor those who serve or have served, and their loved ones, for their sacrifices.
Further, Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start to summer and as graduates start turning their tassels and school kids hang up their backpacks, families enjoy getting out in the southern California sun and celebrating.
While enjoying your three-day weekend is something we are all for, we don’t want you to blow your budget in the process. Therefore, here are some ideas how to spend time with your friends and family while being responsible with your hard earned money!
Support the Troops
While Memorial Day honors fallen servicemen and women, there are various ways you can volunteer and support active duty military that are away from their friends and families this weekend. Operation Gratitude operates a wonderful organization that provides cards and care packages to active duty military. While having fun this weekend might be on the agenda, it’s always good to give back to our community in any way you can. Working with this organization or a similar organization or event will be rewarding for you and your family in many ways.
Host a Pot Luck BBQ or Pool Party
One of the most common ways people get together is around the grill or the pool. While you may be inclined to be the host that purchases all the food and beverages for your guests, we suggest you make this a potluck occasion. Many people will be happy to contribute and welcome someone organizing the items so that there is a variety and plenty for everyone. Head to the Beach
Why not mark the unofficial start to summer with a trip to one of SoCal’s many beautiful beaches. Your costs will be minimal if you pack a picnic lunch, carpool with friends and family to save on any parking fees and bring entertainment like a portable music player, volleyball, sand toys, surfboards or anything else that you want to enjoy in the sand. Most beaches also have live entertainment this weekend that is free and open to the public.
Movies in the Park
All over Los Angeles, movie in the park events are popping up during the summer season. Many cities are starting their series this weekend, or standalone groups are organizing cinema features under the stars. Some many have an entry fee like the ever-popular Cinespia, but if you check out city websites, you are likely to find free movies in the park to enjoy. Added bonus to keep your checking and savings accounts healthy; outside food and drink are usually allowed.
