Have you been avoiding looking at your finances? You’re not alone. Finances can be scary if you don’t know what to do about them. This Friday the 13th, we’re going to let you in on a little secret; there is a way to deal with scary finances! It may be a little spooky, but by doing these things, you can clear out the cobwebs on your personal finances and face your fear.

Go Down into the Scary Basement

The biggest mistake people make when they get into a scary financial situation is to run and hide. If you’ve ever seen a scary movie, you’ll know that hiding under the bed is a sure way to be found. Maybe not right away, but sooner or later, the scary heavy-booted financial mess is going to find you. Skip the hiding and face the problem head-on. Take a look at your financial situation and get a good look at where you’re at and how you got there. Only then can you assess where to go and how best to defeat your money management villain.

Don’t Go Alone

Now that you know just how scary your situation is, it’s time to get a ghost-buster or zombie-hunter on your side. Get some sound advice on personal finances before making any big moves. Your local credit union is a great resource for tips on how to deal with scary finances. There are some great tips online but every situation is different, that is why it’s most helpful to get personal advice from a real person.

Bring a Weapon

Now that you’re not alone, you’re in better shape. You will also however, need a weapon. The knowledge you’ve gotten from your partner-in-crime is great but we suggest going a step further. Arm yourself with a savings account, a retirement account or whatever weapon it is that will help you to fight for your financial life. Once you’ve met with a credit union member associate or financial advisor, you will know exactly what financial weapons are right for you.

Have a Plan to Defeat the Bad Guy

All villains can be defeated, but not without a plan. Make a blueprint of the house and set up traps that will help you along the way to victory! This should look a lot like a financial plan, complete with realistic spending goals, savings goals and deadlines. We recommend delving into your own spending habits and creating a realistic monthly budget you can stick to. Once you follow these tips, you’ll be well on your way to a happy ending!
