According to USA Today, “the average American will spend nearly $1,050 on holiday gifts, goodies, and travel this year.” Even though we want to give our family and friends the ultimate holiday, there are ways to do so without going over budget. Here are three tips to help you save this holiday season.
Do Low-Cost Activities
Although purchasing gifts for your loved ones can get expensive, there are many activities you can do during the holidays that don’t cost very much. One of the best activities that you can do is walking or driving to look at Christmas lights in your community. It truly is a beautiful sight to see and the best part… it’s free!
In addition to looking at Christmas lights, it is always a fun time staying in and watching Christmas movies. To make it even more festive, you could make holiday crafts and treats as you sip on some eggnog or hot chocolate and cuddle up in cozy blankets.
Shop Early
Beat out all the crazy, holiday shoppers this year by shopping in advance. By doing so, you not only avoid crowded stores, but you also get a better deal on the items you want to purchase. When you wait until the last minute, you are forced to pay for an item at full price due to time constraints. Don’t let that be you this holiday season.
Pay With Cash
Whether you pay with cash or card, it doesn’t really make a difference because you’re still paying the same amount either way. However, when you use cash, it holds you more accountable and creates awareness of how much you are spending.
It also helps you gauge how much you have left to spend on each person because when the cash is gone, you are “out of spending money”.
The next time you pay with cash, you will start to notice that you’re thinking twice about whether the purchase is worth it or not.
